Meet the Matchmakers

In this post you'll get to hear from Tiana Tozer, our Lead Matchmaker, about the student recruitment process at Wayfinding.

It might seem odd to refer to student recruitment as Matchmaking, but like everything else at Wayfinding Academy, we do things a bit differently here.

My own college application process was traditional. I researched colleges, chose six to apply to, filled out the application forms, and then waited for that thin white envelope with its impersonal message of acceptance or rejection. I was accepted by four, rejected by two. I ended up at a small private university outside of Portland with 800 undergrads. They had recruited me to play basketball, and it was just like high school, which I hated. I was miserable until I transferred to the University of Oregon in the middle of my sophomore year.

At Wayfinding we believe that college is about more than an education and a career. College is about building community, stretching, learning about who you are, what drives you, what you're curious about, and how you can life live with intention. At the heart of our model is the belief that when life is lived on purpose, people thrive.

For that reason we care about who you are as an individual, not the grades and test scores on a sheet of paper - as a matter of fact we won’t ask for any of that in our application process. The entire matchmaking process is designed to allow students to be themselves, for them to get to know us better, and to reflect on whether or not Wayfinding is a good fit. That's why we view ourselves as matchmakers and not gatekeepers.

Pictured above: our matchmaking process is what lead to these wonderful humans (cohort 2 + crew) joining us at the beginning of this school year.

The underlying belief in this process is that we (that’s you the student, and us the Wayfinding community) are in this together and that the application process is one of mutual decision making.

We don’t care about how the world defines you through check boxes - it’s about how you define yourself and whether or not you think we can help you move forward, toward a life on purpose.
